Networking Without Cringing: Scripts + Strategies

Because the right connections open doors your résumé can’t.

Hi friend 👋,

Let’s talk about something most women secretly hate but absolutely need: networking. For many of us, networking feels like forced conversations, awkward small talk, transactional exchanges, or pretending to be interested while handing out business cards we hope seem impressive. It can feel performative, uncomfortable, or even desperate. So of course it feels cringey. But here’s the truth, and it’s one of the most important career lessons you will ever learn: your network will change your life far more than your qualifications ever will. Every opportunity you want — the job, the partnership, the referral, the introduction, the promotion, the panel invite — lives inside someone else’s mind. Your name has to reach the right room. Today, we’re taking the cringe out of networking and replacing it with confidence, intention, and genuine connection.

Networking often feels awkward because we assume we need to impress people or avoid taking up space. We worry that we’re intruding, that we don’t have anything valuable to say, or that the other person isn’t interested. We overthink every sentence and treat networking like a transaction instead of a relationship. The irony is that everyone else feels just as awkward. Networking becomes significantly easier when you stop performing and start connecting. People don’t remember perfect; they remember genuine.

The Femme Force approach to networking is built on authenticity. Networking is not about selling yourself, begging for help, or reciting your résumé. It’s not about forcing relationships or trying to be someone you’re not. Networking is about building real connections, learning people’s stories, understanding what matters to them, adding value where you can, and showing up with curiosity and confidence. It is relationship-building, not self-promotion.

One of the best ways to remove the pressure is to use language that feels natural. When reaching out to someone you admire, keep it simple: “Hi , I’ve been following your work around and I really admire how you . If you’re open to it, I’d love to ask you a few questions about your career journey.” When reconnecting with someone you haven’t spoken to in a while, lead with warmth by saying something like, “Hi , I’ve been thinking about you lately, how have you been?” When you follow up after meeting someone at an event, reference something memorable: “It was great meeting you at . I loved our conversation about and would love to stay connected.” When asking for a quick chat, make it easy to say yes by offering flexibility. And when asking for a referral, remove the pressure and allow an easy out. Networking thrives when clarity meets respect.

Conversations become easier when you ask questions that spark insight rather than leaning on small talk. Asking what someone is working on, what excites them, how they got started, or what advice they’ve learned opens the door to deeper connection. Curiosity creates rapport far more effectively than trying to sound impressive.

Walking into a room with confidence has nothing to do with volume. Your presence speaks before you do. Ground yourself with slow breaths, relaxed shoulders, a soft smile, and clear, calm energy. Remind yourself that you belong in every room you enter. Networking is not about being the loudest person; it’s about being the most grounded.

One of the biggest mistakes women make in networking is trying too hard to prove themselves. You do not need to list your achievements, force your professional background into the conversation, or pretend to know everything. Instead, ask meaningful questions, listen deeply, offer support, and share your insights naturally. Power is subtle, not performative.

Meaningful networking also comes from the follow-up, which is where many people fall short. Anyone can meet someone, but not everyone nurtures the connection. A thoughtful message within a day or two that references your conversation keeps the relationship alive. Connecting on LinkedIn or Instagram, offering support, and suggesting a simple next step can turn a brief interaction into a long-term professional connection. Relationships grow through consistent touchpoints, not intense one-time conversations.

Networking can feel especially overwhelming for introverts, but introverts often make the best networkers because they build deeper one-to-one connections. Smaller events, arriving early, asking thoughtful questions, taking breaks, and aiming for quality over quantity are all strategies that allow introverts to thrive. Networking is not about working the entire room; it’s about meeting a few people with real intention.

Every strong network includes a range of people: mentors, sponsors, peers, connectors, inspirations, and friends who keep you grounded. These relationships create an ecosystem of support that evolves with you. Your network doesn’t need to be massive. It needs to be meaningful.

The mindset shift that makes networking easier is understanding that this is not an audition. It is an opportunity to meet people whose lives and careers you can positively impact and who can impact yours. Networking is mutual. It is collaboration and community. It is the exchange of possibility.

When you release the pressure to impress and focus instead on connecting, networking becomes easier, more natural, more aligned, and far more effective. Your next opportunity will come from a person, not a portal; a conversation, not a cold application; a relationship, not a coincidence. Build your network quietly, consistently, and confidently. One day, someone will say your name in the right room, and everything will shift.
